The introduction of the first antiviral drug, acyclovir, has been a significant milestone in the treatment of herpes zoster. We present a retrospective evaluation of a cohort of women with recurrent herpes zoster in Canada that experienced genital herpes at baseline and at 4 and 8 months of follow-up. A literature review identified a range of acyclovir formulations that were effective in preventing recurrences, and we compared them with placebo and acyclovir alone. A retrospective review was performed of a cohort of women diagnosed with recurrent herpes zoster who had taken acyclovir during their lifetime, at baseline and at least four months after baseline. Out of the five acyclovir formulations (Famvir, valacyclovir, acyclovir, and valtrex), there were five that were significantly more effective than placebo, and three that were less effective than placebo. These differences in efficacy could not be explained by differences in patient and disease duration or treatment adherence. Thus, further studies are warranted to confirm the efficacy of these drugs in preventing recurrences.

Genital herpes is a chronic disease of the genital skin. Aciclovir and famciclovir are effective for recurrences of genital herpes in many countries []. The most common types of genital herpes are genital herpes with a recurrence rate of 3-10%. Genital herpes can also be acquired from other sources, including the oral cavity, the genital area, the eye, and the urethra [].
In Canada, the first acyclovir treatment for genital herpes was introduced in 1981 []. However, there was no study comparing the efficacy of acyclovir with acyclovir alone, and there was some concern about the possible risk of transmission of herpes zoster infection, which may occur during treatment [, ]. The possibility of transmission of genital herpes from a foreign person (especially during sex) has been reported during the early years of treatment []. In most studies, the majority of patients had active genital herpes, but it has been estimated that more than 10% of the population may be unaware of the infection until it is diagnosed [].
In the US, there is no FDA-approved medication for the treatment of genital herpes. However, acyclovir is widely used as an antiviral medication for the treatment of genital herpes. In Canada, most acyclovir-treated patients are also treated with topical acyclovir, which is a prescription drug [].
In the US, a prescription for acyclovir (Acyclovir) is issued for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes infection. Acyclovir is currently available as generic drugs (Famvir, Valacyclovir, and Valacyclovir) and as a brand-name drug (Acyclovir) [].
